Major Pet Peeve: Honking Instead of Knocking

I’m not sure why people do this, or why they even think it’s acceptable to begin with, but I really wish they’d get some manners and not do it. Nothing irritates me more than people who pull up into your driveway (or I guess parking lot if you live in a townhouse or apartment) and honk their horn at you. They can’t be bothered to park their vehicle, turn it off, and walk up to your down and politely knock. Instead they sit there and honk the horn at you, and if you don’t come out running at the drop of the hat, they’ll honk again and again.

Seriously, what the hell is up with that? That is beyond rude. You came to visit me, the least you can do is get your lazy ass out of the car and knock on my door. It’s called manners! What, do I look like your slave? Do I look like I’m so slavishly devoted to you that I will drop everything I;m doing and come running? I think not.

My grandfather was actually trying to help me install a MWF filter for the refrigerator when someone pulled up and started laying on their horn. It didn’t take me more then three minutes to get to the front door and they were honking for the third time. Impatient much? Then when I get there it’s to find people I don’t even know! Apparently they were friends of my grandfather and saw his truck in the driveway and stopped to talk to him.

Seriously? You go see someone you know at another person’s place and you pull up to that house and lay on your horn? Clearly they were never taught any manners.

I share your feelings on the annoyance of honking instead of knocking but my outright hatred of it has lessened since I’ve had kids. There have been times when I’ve come home with groceries and one or both kids. I’ll need help getting everything inside so I have a special honk I’ll use to let my husband know I need him to come outside. Now in the days when we could afford cell phones I’d call him out that way but that’s no longer an option. I don’t however honk repeatedly! Now that my kids are older I will send them ahead to go inside and fetch him.

    pussreboots,

See, to me that’s something different. You need help and you’ve got kids with you so you’re giving a honk to let your hubby know to come out and help. To me that’s understandable. But going up to someone’s home to visit (or to not even visit them but a guest who is there) and laying on the horn? That’s what irks me. I know I don’t mind when my mom visits and she’s brought stuff over and needs help unloading. That’s not a biggie to me if she gives a little honk to let me know she’s there and needs help.

Wow, that they weren’t even coming to visit you just makes that even ruder. I can’t stand people who honk rather than knock. Taxis do that all the time.

I especially hate when people do this in the middle of the night. That’s the worst time to just sit in your car honking away with no regard to the other humans in the world who might be trying to sleep at 2AM.

My mom had a standing rule that if someone came up and honked, I was not allowed to go out to meet them. They had to come to the door like a civilized person or else they could leave. The only time my friends ever come to the house and honk is when they’re picking me up and I know they are coming – they’ll honk to let me know they are there – after calling me and if I don’t answer my phone or it goes directly to voicemail instead of ringing.

But I agree – it makes it look like these people have no manners whatsoever. Makes you want to post a sign – “Honking will be ignored.”

My parents and sister do that all the time. It’s their way of being informal. It’s kind of like the same as they don’t want me to knock on their door when I come over, they just want me to come in. Their way of taking it easy and they don’t mind if I honk when I pick them up.
