Jury Summons – Joy

Ugh. I got a jury summons in the mail the other day. Got it filled out but only just got it to the post office today. So annoying to fill out the stupid questions on the questionnaire, specifically the questionnaire that is actually made available to attorneys, parties, and judges. Honestly, the information that particular questionnaire asks really is personal and I cannot fathom why they even need some of the stuff they ask. Not to mention, some of it is stuff I wouldn’t be sharing with strangers for any reason to begin with. So why would I want them to know about it? For example:
- Place of birth, regardless of whether it’s outside the U.S. or not.
- Address, including Neighborhood and Nearest Major Intersection where I live. Yes I really want the people who I am serving as a juror for to know exactly where I live.
- Spouse’s name and occupation. Um, hello, I’m the one on the jury not my spouse.
- Jobs held as an adult
- Current and previous occupation – including hours worked, title, ect.
- Number of kids, their ages and occupations.
- Any injury that required hospitalization or extended medical care and if yes what it was
- Ever been a victim of crime: when, crime, arrests made, ect. Because victims just LOVE telling people they were victims. NOT!!
I answered all questions honestly. However, I was vague in order to maintain some privacy and I do not regret it.

Holy cow! I haven’t seen a jury duty summons ask anything like that before. What the heck business is it of theirs if you’ve been hospitalized for an extended period of time and why if you were?? Half that stuff has nothing to do with being a juror. Do they always ask that crap??
Charity,
Apparently here in NM they do. I thought the questions bogus and ridiculous myself, so I asked some folks who’ve served and they recall those rather invasive questions as well. So yeah, for NM, they’re common. =/
But seriously, WTF?
