My only regret is that I’m not one of those fools who is always texting on their phone when driving, so my phone was not handy. Otherwise I would have totally snapped a shot of this stupidity. At the intersection of Gateway West and Airway Blvd there is this bum who is always standing there on the corner begging for handouts. He has some ridiculous cardboard sign that says something like “Jesus Bless You, Help Me Out” or something to that affect.
Now personally, I hate bums. I don’t hate the individual people so much as the ambiguity of them. I’ve heard and seen radio and television “interviews” of individuals who have confessed to standing on corners, holding up signs, and making some decent money for doing absolutely nothing. This is tax-free money they’re getting that they’re not reporting and they’re basically scamming folks who see someone who isn’t as well off and, out of the kindness of their hearts, try to give them a helping hand. I’ve seen bums beg for “money or food” and when they receive food, as soon as the car passes they toss it to the side and go back to begging.
Needless to say, I am completely and utterly not tempted to hand out anything to folks begging for things. I just don’t trust them and the cynical voice in my head will not stop hollering “Scam artist!” the moment I lay eyes on one. Now, after today, I’m even less trusting of them. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a filthy-looking bum who likes he hasn’t seen a shower in weeks, dressed in rags, holding a sign pleading for help, whipping out a shiny Blackberry phone and texting someone. Hey, if he can afford the phone, the guy doesn’t need handouts. He needs to pull his head out of his ass and stop being an eyesore for the rest of us.Tagged: bum, hobo, scam, scam artist, scammer
