My only regret is that I’m not one of those fools who is always texting on their phone when driving, so my phone was not handy. Otherwise I would have totally snapped a shot of this stupidity. At the intersection of Gateway West and Airway Blvd there is this bum who is always standing there on the corner begging for handouts. He has some ridiculous cardboard sign that says something like “Jesus Bless You, Help Me Out” or something to that affect.
Now personally, I hate bums. I don’t hate the individual people so much as the ambiguity of them. I’ve heard and seen radio and television “interviews” of individuals who have confessed to standing on corners, holding up signs, and making some decent money for doing absolutely nothing. This is tax-free money they’re getting that they’re not reporting and they’re basically scamming folks who see someone who isn’t as well off and, out of the kindness of their hearts, try to give them a helping hand. I’ve seen bums beg for “money or food” and when they receive food, as soon as the car passes they toss it to the side and go back to begging. 
Needless to say, I am completely and utterly not tempted to hand out anything to folks begging for things. I just don’t trust them and the cynical voice in my head will not stop hollering “Scam artist!” the moment I lay eyes on one. Now, after today, I’m even less trusting of them. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a filthy-looking bum who likes he hasn’t seen a shower in weeks, dressed in rags, holding a sign pleading for help, whipping out a shiny Blackberry phone and texting someone. Hey, if he can afford the phone, the guy doesn’t need handouts. He needs to pull his head out of his ass and stop being an eyesore for the rest of us.

I don’t really understand how you can say that you hate a group of people. Especially a group of people where you’ve never talked to any of them. I can understand why you don’t wish to give them money, but they are still people. Not a flock of animals that you can just regard as “beneath you”.

Wow, congratulations on reading that post and not actually reading it. I mean you just picked up the word “hate” and completely ran with. Bravo! If you had bothered to actually read the post you would have seen that I said: “I don’t hate the individual people so much as the ambiguity of them.” I then went on to explain that I understand that they’ve fallen on hard times, but that because so many of them aren’t actually bums but people trying to get some free benefits on the side I trust none of them.
Again, thank you so much for taking the time to read and just leaving me an inflammatory comment.

Anyway, omg I can’t believe that bum had a cell phone!! Scam artist indeed. One day in San Francisco I saw two guys bumming around. They looked like college students. One got in a trash can and the other held a sign “white trash” and a cup for handouts. It was just awful. People like that really make you want to distrust all beggars.
I can totally see where you are coming from Joana. I’ve actually heard people say that they’d rather stand on that street corner and hold that sign and get money from passers-by, then go sleep at the local shelter than get a regular job and have “all the hassles.” They say they get more money that way than they did when they were working.
Plus, I’ve even heard of people who have enough money, have homes, jobs, etc who will go and stand on a street corner dressed as a homeless person to try and get money off others! You just can’t be sure anymore.
there will always be a mix of people within that group of people that will either need the money to actually buy food, or scam people out of their change because their too lazy to work for minimum wage like people with pride do, tough call, you never know the person behind the face
