Texas Lawyers are Wacky

Although it’s not something I’m proud of, I will admit to getting a few tickets in my life time. Until recently, all of these tickets have been issued by law officers of the state of New Mexico, be they sheriff, city, or state.

As you know, I got into an automobile accident not that long ago. I got cited for the accident and got a speeding ticket that same day as well. Well, here’s what makes me not like Texas lawyers. Apparently when you get a citation for something your name goes into a government database. Okay, no surprise there. Here’s the kicker, Texas allows lawyers to purchase a list of people who have citations issued to them who have not yet paid or who have not contested them in court. The lawyers then send out solicitations to these people at the mailing addresses they have listed in the database. They literally bombard you with adverts in an attempt to get you to hire them to fight your ticket.

So until I had paid my tickets (I just didn’t feel like going to court in El Paso then heading home only to head back up in a few hours to go to work) every day I came home to see letters and adverts from different law offices in El Paso in the mailbox. I’m sorry, but just because I get a ticket the state of Texas has no right to go selling my mailing address to anyone who wants it. :yell:

Now, since the tickets have been paid I thought it would stop. It hasn’t. I’m still getting adverts in the mail for lawyers willing to fight my citations and I’ve even started getting more ridiculous adverts. Apparently my address has been sold by one of the law offices, or they just like to bombard people in the hopes that the person will come to them for some type of service. I’ve gotten adverts now claiming they can assist me with DUI’s (never had one, never will), child support cases (don’t have a kid, never will), and even unfair layoffs. Just today I got a letter inquiring as to whether or not I have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, which is a cancer that results from asbestos exposure, and promising to help me get what is owed to me. :wtf:

I tell you, this is seriously messed up. Texas should not be allowed to hand out peoples addresses arbitrarily like that. :grr: I mean really, how would these officials and lawyers like to come home to a mailbox full of junk adverts?!

And here I thought it was kind of ass that I was getting letters from ITT asking me about getting an associate’s degree. So, worked my ass off for four years getting my BS in computer science, secured a decent job, and I’m gonna throw it away for an associate’s degree or a certification in drawing blood. I’m all for it for other people, but I’m good, thanks.

    Yeah, that really bites.

Haha. Don’t be silly Joana. People who just give out addresses like that and put in all those sorts of policies are usually not the recipients of those policies. If they were, they’d never institute them in the first place right?

I’m not sure if my sarcasm came across or not  but just in case it didn’t, I have this much more straightfoward thing to say, “That’s a stupid, @#!@-ed-up policy.”

See, I never had any of that happen when I lived in Texas. One would think the state would not be willing to sell addresses like that. *sigh*

That’s terrible!!!! Can’t you sue the company which has kept your address regardless whether you’ve paid or not??

That’s pretty crazy right there. I had no idea they sell the information for people who have tickets. My husband got a speeding ticket in Texas while we were moving out here and we never got spammed. That’s so odd.
