Why Are Hamburgers and Fries so Popular?
Food and Drink - - Posted on March, 16 at 3:05 pm
I took an interesting (and very brief) survey at dNeero recently and it got me to thinking. Why are hamburgers and fries such a popular fast food choice anyway?
I mean, we all know they’re very unhealthy, we know a chicken sandwich from Whattaburger is healthier than a burger from McDonald’s and that a Subway sandwich is even better. And yet, chances are, if you’re hungry and craving a quick bite to eat, you’re going to pull up to the drive through at McDonald’s or Burger King and order a burger, fries, and a drink.
Is it because of the convenience? Is it the price? I know when I was working late nights and graveyard shifts I rarely ate healthy when it came to fast food. I never chose a salad or a sandwich. Why? Because by the time I could get a chance to grab a meal, the healthier locations were closed. On top of that, I rarely had much time to linger so stopping at a restaurant that could offer a more filling and nutritious meal was simply out of the question. So if I wanted to eat healthy I had to bring the food with me from home.
What are your reasons for choosing the food that you choose when it comes to eating out or eating on the go?

Hmm. Well that is an interesting question. And I don’t know the answer.
Yesterday between karate class and shopping and going to the movies we stopped at a Subway and had lunch. I prefer the food at Subway, it tastes better, it’s more filling, and obviously healthier.
Why do we sometimes end up at other drive-throughs? Other than the obvious input from childlings and what they’ve seen advertised on television… I don’t even like McDonalds
Because we’re Americans and we like to be fat? *gigglefit*
Lmao, even at home, when I have to cook it first, I prefer a burger and fries. And a Coke.
I’d say it’s because I know a hamburger and fries are going to be a lot heartier than a chicken salad, and when I’m not planning to eat a salad, I want some food that’ll make me feel like I’ve eaten (or overeaten).
I just choose whatever’s more interesting to my stomach at the time. But I was surprised to learn this: At McDonald’s, The QUARTER POUNDER has 410 calories, 19g fat. The premium grilled chicken club has 570 calories and 21g fat.
You’d think that the opposite would be true.
It really doesn’t matter where you go to eat, because at Subway, the 6-inch tuna sub has 530 calories, 31 grams of fat. What’s important is what you choose to eat.
Julie,
Well, Mickey D’s was just an example.
I’m not likely to pull up to them either.
Loretta,
You’re clearly a better eater than me. I often find myself sitting outside of Sonic or standing in line at Cici’s Pizza. XD
I try to pick healthier choices, but at the same I rarely have the option. Ordering out around here (when I’m not in town) means I have to order junk food sadly. Two bars, two burger joints, kfc, pizza, and a few sit down Mexican restaurants are all that’s local.
Mari,
I think that’s a good point - mindset. We have it in our minds that burgers and fries will be more filling than a salad or chicken sandwich so we want to get our money’s worth and feel full at the same time.
Jessica,
That’s some pretty interesting stats there. But you also got to take into consideration what is on those things. For example, when it comes to eating healthy, if you pick Subway you’re not going to be ordering the club sandwiches (too large). The real health nuts go else where.
But yeah, whatever looks appetizing at the time is usually what decides it for me. That and how much is in my wallet.
