What to Do?

So what does one have to do in order to get a job? It’s really sad when I’m getting beat out by folks who don’t have a degree.
I’ve taken to applying at places that are out of my field but still very easy if you have basic computing and office skills, which I have. However it is very disconcerting to see someone without any sort of education get the job over me.
And if I hear “well, you might be a little overqualified” one more time I’ll murder someone. Really, I will.
I think what’s really hurting me right now is the fact that a lot of the jobs I’ve applied for want us to mail in or fax over our resumes. It’s only after they review them that they call you, or after a certain period of time you can call them. Thus far, it seems employers want someone less educated to break in. I don’t get it.

Yeah, I remember that. I graduated high school with a pile of Tech Certifications. If I was looking for full time employment, in field, I probably could have started at around 30k a year. Problem was, I wasn’t. I need something part time, and something with a schedule I could go to class around (and ride the bus). Every place I applied at wouldn’t do any more than a real basic interview, I was way over qualified for the positions I could realistically do with my schedule.
You have a couple of options:
1) Hook up with a temp agency while the job market improves
2) Make a dumbed down version of your resume for these jobs. Save the full version for the jobs that have stricter requirements.
Good luck!
That doesn’t make sense to me. You have a degree, you should be able to get a job faster than people who don’t have an education. Unless of course the job isn’t right, I suppose. But there just might not be too much available out there where you are. Move to Houston
The way the job market is, if you have a degree, and you’re not applying for a job in your field, they figure you won’t stick around long, that it’s just a stepping stone. But then, when an internal position comes open that you need a degree for, there’s no one to fill it. Go figure.
But I agree, I’ve seen a lot of people who have degrees who can’t get any sort of job because they’re “overqualified.” Hello? You’d think they’d take someone who is overqualified over someone who needs to have their hand held in order to figure out their job.
I laughed when I read Sarah’s suggestion about making a dumbed down version of your resume only because I did the very same thing. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good suggestion. It just reminded me of the frustration I endured. I feel your pain. It is a trying time. I’ll add this though: I hated when people told me not to give up. Like what else was I going to do? Like giving up was an option.
