The Verdict on Chili Flavor Ramen
Food and Drink - - Posted on June, 27 at 6:32 pm
Normally, when it comes to ramen, I buy Ichiban Ramen. Mainly because the broth made from their mixtures is the closest that any brand sold here in the US comes to the authentic instant ramen I’ve had from Japan. That’s not to say that I don’t like other brands, like Top Ramen. So when I say a flavor in the stores that I had never seen before, let alone tried, I had to give it a shot. The flavor, as you might have guessed from this post’s title, is Chili flavor.

Ah, I feel as though Uzumaki Naruto has taken control of my body in some manner. After all, that guy lives and breathes ramen. I imagine that if he had a blog his posts would all be similar to this one. Probably interspersed with posts that read something like: Sasuke-teme is such a bastard dattebayo! and rambling on and on about what a cool shinobi he is, how he’s going to become Hokage, and how turbo-chaged and ultra-powerful his new version of the Rasengan is.
But I digress.
I love chili as much as any other native of New Mexico, and I like ramen, so I was curious to see what the combined effect would be. It wasn’t like I thought it would be. With the chili flavor mix in it, I’m sad to say, that it tasted nothing like ramen in the least. On top of that, the texture of the noodles did not complement the broth in the least. They clashed badly which resulted in the feeling of eating noodles with chili-flavored broth, not ramen.
I did, however, like the flavor of the broth though. As I stated though, it wasn’t ramen, and I would probably eat it again. It’s plain to see though that if you’re a ramen lover or someone who doesn’t like chili all that much that this probably won’t hit the spot with you. Frankly, I can only see a small portion of people actually enjoying this, and no one is going to be calling this flavor “ramen” any time soon.

If Ichiban is the brand I think it is…it’s my absolute favorite! I haven’t seen it in years though.
My mom used to buy it for me. It wasn’t nearly as salty tasting as Top Ramen is, and it tasted wonderful.
I’m not sure about chili flavored ramen. Was it really spicy or hot?
Charity,
I know what you mean, I can only find Ichiban at certain stores, and even then, they don’t always carry a lot. Surprisingly Wal-Mart (over here anyway) has a sort of “international aisle” where I’ve found quite a few interesting Asian products there - like Pocky, jasmine rice, Yan Yan, and anko (sweet red bean paste).
I guess it was sort of spicy and no it wasn’t hot. But then again, I do eat chili regularly, nice hot chili to be exact, so what is not spicy or hot to me might be considered the opposite by others. I know that the hot sauce served at places like KFC, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box, is sweet and annoying to me where as some I know (who aren’t chili eaters really) have found it spicy and/or hot.
Aww, too bad it didn’t end up tasting as good as you wanted it to or expected. The idea is a good one though.
I found it at our Wal-Mart but they only had one flavor, and I can’t think of what it was at the moment. I liked the beef flavor of the Ichiban myself. But I found a website that would let me order it. LOL
When it comes to ramen, I usually go Maruchan, mainly because around where I am they are the only ones who sell it in cup form, so I can eat it at work.
As it is, I had their chili form the other day, my girlfriend decided to pick some up for me while she was out shopping, and thought I might like it. I’d have to agree with you, it didn’t taste much like ramen at all, and I didn’t care for its “chili” properties.
I’ve seen all the new chili stuff now and I tried them; they were alright. Different from your normal noodle flavors, but relatively yummy. Some were a bit hot to eat though. =\
And yes, they’re not really “ramen” are they? Lol.
