The Use of Books on Disc is Spreading Here Too!

I’m sitting here staring at a boxed set called the “John Grisham Value Collection”1 and puzzling over what led to my mom making this switch. She’s decided that from now on she’s going to be purchasing any book that she’s interested in reading on disc. She’s taken to listening to them on the way to and from work and even here at home when she’s doing other stuff.

I admit, it seems like the ideal way to fit in “reading” a book while keeping on the go, but at the same time, I have to ask. Are we getting so bogged down with obligations in our fast-paced get there and get it done society that we cannot even spare an hour or two a day (or week) to read?

I’m hardly one to talk, when it comes to running errands I high tail it all over town and woe to anyone who slows me down. But the reason I do this is because I want to get the chores done so that I can some leisure time to do what I want. If we’re combining our leisure time with work time doesn’t that then leave us more time to “work”? Are we not then working ourselves harder and stressing out more since we are beginning to cut back on the down time?

What’s your take on these and similar things?

  1. This set includes A Time to Kill, The Firm, and The Client which are apparent “must haves” for Grisham fans. []

I’m with you, reading in itself is just too much fun to let the book on tape do the reading for you. I mean, I love to watch TV or movies, but I also want to read the book the movie is based on. Sure, it takes more time, and multitasking can be good, but listening to a book while driving just has to take so much out of the experience.
