Thank You for Asking

Home Life, Rants and Raves - - Posted on May, 8 at 9:17 am

I love my grandfather, I really do. But right now he is royally getting on my nerves. Since he came home he’s been giving out orders left and right, and for some odd reason, I ended being the sole person to take care of him. Every time I turn around it’s Joana do this, Joana do that, I need this, have you done this yet, and so forth and so forth. I’ve been dealing with it pretty well, although I’ve found myself wondering why any sane person would ever choose to become a nurse and do this day in and out for strangers. Today though, I’m just about to snap.

I slept in a little late, so I didn’t empty the catheter right away. First thing I hear when I wake up is “Where were you? This needs to be emptied now!”. I’m not a morning person, but I’ve been getting up between 6:30 and 7:00 am daily to take care of him. Just because I slipped up and woke up at 8am is not a reason to yell at me. Then he makes his appointment with one of his doctors. He can’t find the number that is plain as day on the sheet, have to dial for him, and despite me explaining every single day why he has to call and go, he forgets and just tells the receptionist on the phone “Hi yes, you’re supposed to have an appointment for me today”. Naturally they don’t, he has to make it, which he gripes at me for not telling him. :grr:

The real ass pisser though is the fact that he just went ahead and scheduled the appointment for today at 11am then hung up. Excuse me? Just how did you plan to get there grandpa? Why naturally I’m playing chauffeur of course. So very nice of you to ask me if 11am was okay with me, since you know, I’m the one that has to help you get ready and take you up there, then wait around and bring you back home on top of all the million other little tasks and chores you want done today. As it were, I actually had some plans for today, but now those have been completely smashed to accommodate you. *dry voice* Sore domo. Thank you so much for asking.

I’m just feeling really run down, ragged, and grouchy right now. I need a cigarette.

Joana, I certainly feel for you. It’s rough sometimes taking care of a person. We went through the same with my grandfather as he was getting on in live. Luckily we were a large family and took turns helping out. But it was rough on him as well as he was a very independent person and had a hard time with someone taking care of him so to speak. Catch your breath, have your smoke and enjoy, I sure wish my grandfather was still here to enjoy is great grand children now as I know he’d of loved them.

That’s so not fair for him to expect you to be there 24/7 just waiting for his every command. He can’t expect that of you.

It’s really tough being a caregiver and I give you a lot of credit for doing it. What happened to the rest of the family? Did they all do a disappearing act on you?

It takes a lot longer for elderly people to recover from any type of surgery due to the anesthesia. I don’t know if he’s usually cranky or forgetful but if he wasn’t before this is due to a lot of factors including the surgery. If he was before, it’ll be worse…but only for a while.

    You need a break girlfriend!

    Connie,

Thank you, at it seems that at long last I’m getting that much needed break. As for the rest of the family…My mom works and isn’t home until late in the evenings so she’s understandable. Everyone else though just kind of visited when it was convenient for them and drifted away after it was realized how long it would take for him to actually recover. =/
