Silly Kitties? Invest in a Safe Alternative

I love poinsettias, they have nice big green leaves and the flower itself is a rich vibrant red. Poinsettias also come in other colors, sure, but the classic red will always be my favorite. I love and like to have them in the house year-round, not just during Christmas. Now, there is a bit of a misconception that poinsettias are a toxic plant. They can cause an allergic reaction, if you’re say allergic to latex, but they’re not actually toxic.
Unless you have cats that think the leaves are just to die for.
Consumption of poinsettias by animals will lead to diarrhea and vomiting. Now, we used to be able to keep poinsettias in the house, because they were completely uninteresting to Isis and Misty. However, that’s not the case with Denali. She looks at them and sees an all you can eat buffet. now that Isis spends most of her time indoors, she’s taken to eying the house plants and helping herself.
As a result, aside from a couple of planters with sweet grass for the kitties to nibble on, we have nothing but silk plants in the house now.
Silk plants are great because they’re easy to take care of. Pick the container and location you want them in and you’re done. Sure you have to dust and clean them, but when you compare the time spent on cleaning them once in a while to the time spent on watering, pruning, and the overall care that goes with a living plant it’s nothing. No worries about it getting enough sunlight (or too much) aphids and insects taking over, putting nutrients in the soil, watering, pruning dead leaves and stems - none of that fuss. And you still get that beautiful green look.
Of course, for me, the real benefit is I’m not bringing something into the house that poses a threat to my oddball kitties.
