RingO’s: It’s Chicken Rings!

Food and Drink - 3 Comments » - Posted on September, 21 at 6:09 pm

There was nothing in the refrigerator, the cupboards were pretty bare, and the freezer had a good amount of frozen chili and not much else. A trip to Wal-Mart was in order, no doubt about that.

I was hunting in the freezer section for some onion rings, as I had already grabbed a bag of frozen French fries, when I spied something I had never seen before – Chicken Rings. I figured, what the heck? So I decided to forgo the onion rings and grabbed a bag of chicken rings instead.

RingO’s, from Heidi’s Chicken Creations, were definitely a unique experience. They did in fact taste like chicken, which is where some easy to cook frozen foods fail spectacularly. While I did find them filling and tasty, I sincerely doubt that I will get them again. The RingO’s had a very “greasy fast food” taste them. There was a distinct after taste as a result of the grease as well. If you’ve ever gotten an order of chicken nuggets or French fries from a fast food restaurant that didn’t strain the food properly before serving it up you’ll know what I mean.

Now, generally speaking, when I buy freezer food that can be heated up in a microwave or conventional oven I expect it to be less greasy than fast food fresh from the drive through. The RingO’s, as mentioned, had a very greasy taste to them. When I had polished off my serving I was a bit grossed out to see just how much oil was left behind.

As you can see in the pictures above, that’s quite a bit of grease. Now, keep in mind, I added nothing to these guys. Just placed them in the microwave and cooked them the recommend time. I took them out and literally saw the grease covering the plate and then grabbed a paper towel to sop up the grease and see just how much grease there really was. As you can see, it’s quite substantial.

While these guys make for some good finger food, the grease they’ll leave behind will turn you off from seconds. These guys could seriously tempt the most die hard of coach potatoes to seriously read some diet pill reviews. Definitely not something you want your kids to be chowing down on as an after school snack either.

Regardless though, we’ve got quite the spread set up for the Cowboys and Packers game. Let’s Go Cowboys!

Not my cuppa tea. I always get a cough after eating greasy food like that. And the aftertaste stays with me for a long time. I’ll stick to salads and my occasional junk food.

I’ve been a non meat eater for over 10 years now, but even when I did eat meat I tended to avoid things that I couldn’t identify with the animal. This was following a programme I’d seen on reconstituted meat products, which tends to go into such things. Then as you say there is the fat/grease aspect. I suspect they probably have a lot of salt in there too. I think you’d have been better with the onion rings.
