Repairing Pyro, An Epic in the Making

Well, the guy I took my car to got back to me with a full estimate on what it’ll cost to get my car fixed – it was over $2,000.
Apparently some of the parts needed to fix my suspension are hard to find, and because of that, they’re expensive or in some cases that he noticed, over priced. I asked him today for an estimate on what it would cost without fixing the bumper and fender, that brought it down to $1,800. To be honest though, I would want the fender fixed. The bumper I can deal with, but that fender, yeah, I want it fixed.
My mom has a few friends in the auto repair business, so I asked Sal (he’s the one who has my car right now) to fax over a list of the parts needed and the prices he could get them at. He said sure, so here’s hoping maybe they can get a hold of a few parts at lower prices.
This would have been so much easier if I could have just had the car towed to one of their body shops, but the accident was in El Paso, TX and their shops are in Las Cruces, NM. That’s a lot of mileage for a tow truck to cover and on top of that, apparently Texas doesn’t like tow trucks leaving. By that I mean, tow trucks from Texas entering New Mexico have to stop at the weight station, get the permits, and pay the fees by tonnage. We were looking at almost $400 to tow it to Las Cruces. I kind of need that money to fix the car, ya know? Ironically, tow trucks from New Mexico can enter and leave Texas without stopping at the weigh stations. Go figure.
So yeah, my best bet is to get the car up and running, then worry about the appearance later. Although really, the way that fender is all crinkled up, it would be better to get it fixed since I know, for a fact, that the reservoir for the windshield cleaner fluid got smashed.
FYI I created a new category today, one I thought was long over due. It’s called “Automobile Files”. So if you see a bunch of old posts jumping around on the feed, it’s because I’m moving older posts that belong in that category into their proper place. Sorry!

That’s a really expensive fix! it sucks, it really does. I hope your connections can get the parts cheaper for you.
Ohh that is quite expensive!! Hope you get your car fixed!
Ah sorry to hear about your fender bender problems… maybe if you don’t want to spend so much, to go to the car junk yard and see if you can find parts that are still in good condition. You get them for MUCH cheaper that way. It’s a hit and miss. I would also find a few more vendors to check out pricing in case one of them is jacking you. Good luck on it!
Destiny,
That’s really good advice, and normally I’m all for going to a junk yard. However, working full time and living forty miles away from work cuts down the time I have to go. Especially when I’m borrowing vehicles.
The good thing is, we did get the list of parts to a friend of my mom’s and he said…I’m taking the car and fixing it myself. I get the parts a hell of lot cheaper.
That sounds expensive, but I guess it could’ve been much worse. At least they’re nice though to help you look for cheaper parts!
