Lens Day: Wood

Memes, Shutterbugging - 6 Comments » - Posted on March, 5 at 2:38 pm

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another Lens Day post! I know you’re all just positively thrilled to see me flaunt my doubtful skills.

The challenge for this week was “wood”. Instead of taking a more obvious route and snapping a shot of something that is wood, made up of wood, or contains wood, I opted to be a bit more creative. I don’t know how many of you have ever come across an old bone or bones that have been exposed to the elements for some time. Those who have will agree that weathered bones tend to take the appearance of wood after a while. In fact, in many cases bone fragments can be easily mistaken for wood chips and splinters to the inexperienced eye. ;)

Pictured here is the tibia of a cow that has been sitting out in the dry New Mexico weather for about a year now. It’s had it’s share of rain, but has mostly seen dry heat. I am particularly pleased with how this one came out and it was my favorite of the series of shots I took. I just really like how the dry grass seems to be reaching up to envelop the bone. The shoots of green grass amidst the dry grass gives the impression that life still persists even when surrounded by death.

Here we have the left mandible of an elk or deer, judging by the size and the type of teeth present in the mandible. I’m not experianced enough to be certain which, let alone identify the type I’m afraid. Shizuku brought this home to me one evening and laid it at my feet as I got out of my car. The odd thing is that this occurred a couple of days after the completion of the class assemblage project in my Faunal Analysis class. I had been bring home bones for the dogs to gnaw on, observing their habits, and photographing the bones for a couple of days prior to this and then Shizuku brings me a nice bone. :) I love my doggy.

Very interesting twist on the topic. Wow, those bones are huge. So you just see them randomly laying around the desert? It’s cute to hear about your doggy, I sometimes forget you have one with as much as I hear about the kittehs.

I didn’t know that could happen to wood. That’s pretty awesome that you have those to take pictures of. I wouldn’t have anything cool at all except if I bought a pair of earrings. Lol.

    Julie,

I know right? Poor Shizuku. :( But, it’s his own fault for never letting me snap shots of him! That and he stays outside a lot. Used to be an indoors doggy, but he doesn’t want to be with the kitties.

Yeah, when you go hiking in the desert proper you’ll be surprised to see what makes its way to the surface. I’ve gone out hiking and stumbled across all kinds of faunal remains. The most interesting time though was when I found human remains. o.O

    Maria,

You mean bone right? Yeah, actually quite a few people are surprised that the elements can, over time, play such havoc with remains.

Hehe, did you ever see the post with my specimen collection? You might like that as well. :)

    Maria,

Ah, okay! See I figured that, but I wasn’t sure, so I had to ask to make sure. :)
