Feeling a Little Guilty

So I might have just condemned this cute doggy to death all because I sure as hell can’t keep him and I don’t know a single person who wants a dog. :( Maybe I should back up and explain a bit?

A couple of days ago this cute and very friendly brown dog started showing up. He drove Shizuku and Big Mama (my mom’s dog) crazy but he was a cutie. He was a nice light brown in coloring, had a ridge of fur along his back that would stand on end when upset, and a black muzzle. He also seemed to be very protective of me, as he really got mad at Denali when she scratched the shit out of me, which I thought was cute and scary at the same time.

I’m not good with dog breeds, so I can’t tell you what breed the dog is or if it’s a mix. But he had good “guard dog” qualities yet remained friendly enough to be taken out and about. As a result, since they had been harvesting the corn field across the road these past couple of days, and that’s when the dog showed up, we kind of assumed it was one of the worker’s. Of course, when one of the aforementioned workers said “that’s a nice dog you got, he’s been keeping us company” we realized that we were mistaken in our assumption.

So, after asking all the field workers, as well as our neighbors and even the EBID folks that come out here, it became apparent that the dog was yet another animal that had been thrown here. Now this is one of the reasons I hate living by a large canal, and I’m not talking a pissy little irrigation ditch, but an actual canal. You’ll be surprised how many people toss and dump their pets in the canal. Some hope the animal will be hurt enough and no one finds it, others seem to think it’s just a dump spot. What ever the case, I see a lot of animals ditched here. :(

So, since we really couldn’t afford to take another dog, and my grandfather didn’t want to take the dog to my great grandmother’s house (since a certain relative is trying to sell it) and no one we knew or spoke with wanted the dog, I got the task of calling animal control. He was very friendly though, and the dog catcher had no problems getting him in the truck either. So I really hope he can be adopted and go to a good home. :)

What’s ironic is that, according to my cell phone, I called animal control to come and pick the dog up at around 1 o’clock this afternoon. The dog catcher just barely showed up to take the dog away. Talk about taking their sweet time to get over here. :frown: Considering I was already feeling guilty about having to call animal control, the waiting around period made it a hell of a lot worse.

Poor doggy. I too hope he gets adopted and taken to a good home cause he sounds like a sweet little guy.

    Julie,

He was a sweet little guy. In fact we really really wanted to keep him. But realistically we knew couldn’t. Can’t afford another dog, and since EBID won’t allow us to build a fence that will enclose the property entirely (since our house borders the canal and an irrigation ditch) we can’t comfortably keep any other dogs confined to the yard either. :(
