BTT: May I Introduce

This week’s Booking Through Thursday question asks the how behind finding favorite authors.
1. How did you come across your favorite author(s)? Recommended by a friend? Stumbled across at a bookstore? A book given to you as a gift?
All of my favorite authors, strangely enough, were ones I just happened upon. Take for instance, Kim Harrison. Her book Dead Witch Walking had only just come out and I spied it in the new releases stand at Barnes & Noble by chance when I walked through the door. At the time I was horribly disappointed with the turn LKH’s books were taking and I was looking for a new author in the genre. After reading Harrison’s book I was addicted and eagerly awaiting the next release. Carrie Vaughn is another such encounter. I kept seeing Kitty and the Midnight Hour recommended everywhere, but as I’ve been feeling the paranormal genre is becoming sorely over saturated I was loathe to give her a shot. I was so scared in fact I waited until the book became available at Paperback Swap. When I got it I just couldn’t put it down, I was hooked and it was love at first sight.
There have been a few times friends have recommended authors for me to check out only to find that I had already been following them.
I think the one exception to this was Stephenie Meyer. I remember some girls at one of the message boards going on and on about how great Twilight was and after being horribly disappointed with a lot of bestsellers I was loathe to check it out. As anyone knows, I’m a big Meyers fan now.
2. Was it love at first sight? Or did the love affair evolve over a long acquaintance?
For the most part it’s been love at first sight. I loved the book and then followed the series and or sought out other books by the same author. The only exception really was Mercedes Lackey. I’d read several of her series before and I enjoyed them but while I could count on her to always entertain me I wouldn’t go so far as to say she was a favorite author. Not until I the day I picked up her [then] new book Joust. I was drawn and sucked in immediately. Shortly there after I stumbled upon her elemental mages series as well and that was it, she was elevated to favorite author status.

there are times that i was also dissapointed with some best sellers. good thing, just like you, it did not stop me from reading other books.
mine is also up!
Wow. You sound just like me! I’ve been searching for authors to replace LKH for quite awhile now. I think I’ve got Dead Witch Walking somewhere but I haven’t read it as of yet. And I adore Carrie Vaughn! I’m reading Kitty and the Silver Bullet right now.

CJHill,
I finished reading “Kitty and the Silver Bullet” the other day and I was impressed. 5 Star Rating, two thumbs way up, kind of impressed. Very awesome, twists upon twists, character growth that is believable, and characters that just continue to grow on you more and more.
Authors I’ve found to fill that void that the ABVH series left when it went sour are: Kelley Armstrong, Carrie Vaughn, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, and Patricia Briggs.
Mercedes Lackey is one of my husband’s favorite authors. I’ve sort of fallen out of love with her style of writing.
