BTT: Cover-Up

Ah, the days are flying by! It’s already Thursday, which means it’s time for another Booking Through Thursday:
While acknowledging that we can’t judge books by their covers, how much does the design of a book affect your reading enjoyment? Hardcover vs. softcover? Trade paperback vs. mass market paperback? Font? Illustrations? Etc.?
I think the design of a book does play a pretty major role in the selection of books, because let’s face, if the cover doesn’t attract your attention you’re pretty likely to over look the book on a shelf full of rivals.
But in terms of reading enjoyment? Well I prefer paperbacks to hardback because they’re cheaper and because they take up less room. Not to mention, they’re much better as traveling companions than hardbacks are. I have nothing against trade paperbacks, except of course the fact that they’re a little pricey. Really though, when I’m reading a book the cover is the last thing on my mind. I’m into the story and that’s it. With the exception of dust jackets, there’s always a little voice in the back of my head telling me to be care not to mess it up.
That’s why I tend to take them off and leave them on the bookcase or desk while I’m reading the book.
But for the most part, I’m into the story and couldn’t care less what’s holding it together. In fact, if I’m thinking about the cover while trying to read, that’s usually a sign of a very bad book.

This might be perverse but I think more about the cover art on books I enjoy than on those I don’t. Happy BTT on Friday.
