BTT: After the Honeymoon
Bookworm, Memes - - Posted on February, 14 at 11:01 pm
I just got back from a nice little shopping expedition with my mother and dinner at Johnny Carino’s. I just realized that I hadn’t checked what this week’s Blogging Through Thursday question is, and upon seeing it I just had to laugh.
Have you ever fallen out of love with a favorite author? Was the last book you read by the author so bad, you broke up with them and haven’t read their work since? Could they ever lure you back?
Have I ever fallen out of love with an author? Doe the name Laurell K Hamilton ring a bell? I was a devoted and loyal reader of hers for many years and whenever a new book in her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series came out I rushed to the store to buy it in hardback. enjoyed her Meredith Gentry series, but I was just an avid ABVH fan. That’s all there was to it, and then her series started going seriously downhill.
The main character did a complete one-eighty, and when fans pointed this out Ms. Hamilton argued that we were all prudes and couldn’t comprehend character development.
Incubus Dreams was the last book I read in the series, although I did eventually read her novella for Micah, a character I did like. I was horribly disappointed with ID, as you can see in my review, and Micah wasn’t much better really. I’ve followed the series for years, and I am still partly curious as to how it’ll end, but the bitter disapointment I feel every time I read reviews on her newer books holds me back. The reviews show that the series is just on a steady downward spiral and I don’t want to see it. I did eventually get two of her newer books through a book swap Harlequin from ABVH and A Lick of Frost from her Merry Gentry series, but I haven’t gotten the guts to read them yet.
The honeymoon is definately over.
The true irony behind this question is that, while out shopping, my mother and I stopped at Barnes & Nobel. She noticed a shelf full of LKH books and had to point them out to me and asking if I was going to get one. Needless to say, the floodgate was open and did my little spiel about LKH. Another shopper heard my ranting and had to come and join in too.
Apparently she is just as disappointed as I am.
Within minutes there were five of us talking about how great the series [ABVH] was up until Obsidian Butterfly and how the rest of the books were just downhill from there.
my poor mother was just standing there in awe. Ah, you gotta love us bookworms.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

well, so far, I’ve still yet to find a
favourite author who disappointed me in
words. I’m sorry to hear about your
disappointments in the later books :/
and happy valentine’s~ (:
I have 3 of her ABVH books and 1 of her Merry Gentry books. I loved the Merry Gentry books, but then again, I’m a fae freak. I’ve only read the first book in the ABVH series, I have book 2, and I have another but it’s a later book and I can’t remember which one.
My disappointment came with the 4th Merry Gentry book. I started it, put it down, and couldn’t pick it back up again. I’ll have to try again some day.
Charity,
You can keep reading the ABVH books just fine until the 11th book or so.
That’s where the change is just too much.
As for the Merry Gentry series, the fourth book is “seduced by Moonlight” or something right? I like the character of Frost a lot so I’m going to struggle on, but with Seduced I was disappointed in just how little happened and the fact that not even a whole day (in the story) had passed and the book was finished. I was like, wow, nothing was accomplished!
I’ve never read any of those books, I’ll have to check them out.
