A Day Out in the Wind and Doomsday Review

Initially we had planned to get together on Thursday, but due to some conflicts in schedules, we ended up going out to have a “girl’s day out” of sorts today. I kind of wish we could have gone yesterday, just because it was no where as windy as it was today. Seriously, I just washed my hair and you should have seen the dirt I got out of it! But If we had gone yesterday we wouldn’t have been able to go see Doomsday and that would have been a big loss.
Because of the wind we tried to stay indoors as much as possible and ended up hanging out in the mall for the most part. I got a few things from Hot Topic and Barnes & Noble, of course. Namely, I snagged two awesome Naruto t-shirts. I’ll take pictures of those later and post them tomorrow. At B&N I ended up getting a paperback copy of a book I’ve been wanting as well as one of the missing volumes of Claymore that I needed. All in all, when it came to shopping, I was a good girl and kept my money where it was.
I did learn a valuable lesson today though. When out shopping in the mall, the basic heart of American pop culture, and especially when in the vicinity of a bookstore, do not wear a t-shirt of the awesome Potions Master, Severus Snape.
You will have people grabbing you by the arm and spinning you around to look at your shirt, everyone will try to strike up a conversation with you, and little children will run up to you to tell you how much they love Snape. I swear, I must have heard “OMFG! I love your shirt!” or “OMG!! It’s Snape! I Love Him!!” about a dozen times.
Now, if you don’t like spoilers it’s time for you to comment on how nice you thought the shopping expedition was. There will be some spoilers ahead, but I’ll try to keep them to a minimal.
Since Doomsday opened up in theaters today I really wanted to see it and thankfully S and Moira were eager to see it too. The movie was bloody awesome. Action was awesome and spot on, not to mention, the actors didn’t feel the need to cuss out of control to cover up their poor acting skills either, something a lot of action movies seem to do as of late. In particular I was impressed with the car chase scene at the end. There wasn’t anything in that chase scene that hadn’t been done before, except maybe the reverse game of chicken, but the way it was compiled and carried out made it feel like something I hadn’t seen before.
I was in love with the lead actress’ performance. When playing a tough female role, the tendency is either a character you can fit with the role or a downright bitch who you cannot connect with. Not the case here. Spot on, emotion when needed, attitude when warranted, and snappy lines left and right.
In April of 2008 a deadly virus broke out in Scotland, it was incurable and untreatable. Victims would break out in bloody sores and vomit horrendously. Their deaths were slow and agonizing. Unable to treat the virus let alone develop a cure, a thirty foot wall was erected around all of Scotland in order to prevent the spread of the disease. The seas nearby were off limits and the skies above were no-fly zones with orders to shoot down any craft that violated these laws. One lone satellite was left to monitor the activity. The people inside were left to die. Murder, rape, even cannibalism occurred and then it all went quiet. No one was thought to have survived, then three years before the events of the movie some people were spotted in the streets of abandoned cities – survivors. Now that the virus, called the Reaper Virus, has made a return outside of walls a team is sent in to find out how these other people survived and what can be done to save mankind.
The plot is not so simple as that though, you have a woman whose family was on the other side of the wall when the proverbial gates came down; a twisted family war inside of the wall; and a nasty political scheme outside of the wall where thousands of innocent lives will become mere stepping stones to greatness. The movie easily has something to draw in everyone from all genres. Since society, as we know it, has essentially broken down inside the wall, new societies have sprung up. There are those who live in the city, dressed like cyber punks, who have no problem roasting people they catch alive and carving them up to eat. They decorate their vehicles and homes with the remains of the departed, and essentially have a gang mentality. Then there are those who have retreated to the highlands. If you like knights on horses and gladiator fights, you’re going to love these folks.
All in all, it was a very entertaining movie. You’ve got a ton of action, adventure, comedy, and excitement. Plus, tons of awesome accents – everyone is British or Scottish after all.
Parents please be advised, the R-rating is for a purpose. There’s brief nudity, but no sexual content. There is however a ton of blood and guts flying. Heads impaled (and chopped off), people beaten to death, run over, smashed, throats slits – the whole shebang. Not to mention, there is one scene where a man is burned alive. The man’s roasted corpse, complete with charred face frozen in a grimace of pain, is chopped up and passed around to a hungry crowd. Definitely things not meant for the squeamish.

It’s about apocalyptic virii and blood and guts?
I am so there.
And LOL about the Snape t-shirt. Were I in your place, those people spinning me around to look at my shirt would have been bitten.
Girl’s days out are the best! Glad you had a good time
