Is Amazon’s Kindle a Bookworm’s Dream?

I’ve been browsing around to see which online stores are listing the hours of their Black Friday sales, and possibly even the sales they intend to have, when I came to Amazon. On the front page there is a 470×1154px graphical advertisement advertising Amazon’s Kindle, which is sold out right now but if you order now you’ll reserve your place in line when they get more in stock in December. The Kindle is marketed as as the solution for avid readers who want access to a plethora of books, the technology of today, and portability.
It’s the size of a paperback, roughly, and you can subscribe to newspapers, journals, blogs and feeds instantly. No matter where you are you can download and buy books from the Kindle store. And, this is the part I probably like the most, a high speed wireless connection that allows you to connect to the internet where ever you are. No searching for hot spots or anything like that.
This sounds like a dream come true, but what about all of the books I already own? Currently I would have to buy them anew from the kindle store in order to have access to them. Even .pdf files of ebooks you already own don’t transfer very well onto the device yet. And what about the fact that I might honestly want to have a hard copy as well? You can’t get an author to sign your kindle after all, and certainly, if the kindle is damaged or stolen, you’ve lost your entire library. Not to mention there are no “used” ebooks, or ebook-swaps either. So many “what if’s” with this device. Plus, I’m not too crazy about the price – $399. Granted, it’s not that much, but at the same time, it’s not all that cheap either.
Do you have a Kindle or are planning to get one? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the product.

Wow, what an amazing idea. Yes, really expensive and not all that practical because I, too, love the hard copy real book. Plus, reading that much on a computer screen can hurt the eyes. But the idea is brilliant for those electronic addicts who never picked up a paperback could now become readers of real novels.
