FAnime Friday!

Some really great series came to an end this past season, Claymore and Kaze no Stigma, just to name a few, but new series always come along that will grasp your attention and hook you nice and deep. Below are two such series that I recommend you pay close attention to.

Dragonaut: The Resonance (ドラゴノーツ -ザ・レゾナンス)

Dragonaut: The ResonanceDragonaut: The Resonance began airing on October 3rd of this year on TV Tokyo and is directed by Manabu Ono and produced by Gonzo and NAS. Serialization of the manga is expected to start on November 2, 2007 and will be released in Jump Square.

The show opens up with the protagonist of the story, Kamishina Jin and his family getting ready to board a space shuttle and saying good bye to his best friend Tachibana Kazuki. Everything appears to be going well and Jin, his mother, and sister are quite relaxed in the commercial shuttle. Jin’s father is one of the pilots flying the shuttle. As the shuttle launches however it is struck by asteroids pelting to Earth, the only survivor of the crash is Jin. Fast forward two years to the present time. As the only survivor, and the son of the “pilot who screwed up” Jin gets a lot of negative attention and feels utterly alone.

According to the story’s synopsis, twenty years prior to the story’s actual beginning an asteroid, so named Thanatos, is destined for Earth but on the way destroys Pluto. As a result of Pluto’s destruction Thanatos becomes stuck in Pluto’s orbit, but this is only temporary. To protect Earth and prevent its destruction the International Solarsystem Development Agency (ISDA) begins work on its “D-Project” which results in the creation of “Dragons”, the source of which is a dragon egg that was discovered at the bottom of the ocean. The controllers of these dragons are called Dragonauts (hence the series name).

Unfortunately for us, Thanatos has its own dragons which make their way to Earth. Jin becomes involved with ISDA and becomes a Dragonaut after seeing one of these dragons attack a woman. His guide in this adventure is Toa, a young pink haired girl that kicks some major butt.

Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 (機動戦士ガンダム 00)

Kidou Senshi Gundam 00The series premiered on October 6th of this year on TBS and is under the direction of Seiji Mizushima. Twenty-five episodes of this series will be shown and then the rest will be aired at a later time. This lastest Gundam series is not related to any of the previous series, although some fans have drawn a few paralelles between Gundam 00 and Gundam Wing. Some interesting changes to the typical Gundam series include the use of the real Gregorian calender instead of the atypical fictional ones, the lack of space colonies, and the lack of a unified Earth government, all of which have become staples of Gundam series.

Gundam 00 takes place in the year 2307 AD. The long held fear of humans has become a reality, Earth’s fossil fuels have become exhausted. Mankind now relies on three “orbital elevators” that are essentially solar-power generators which are controlled by the three main power-players of Earth: the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (United States and Japan), the Human Reform League (China, Russia and India), and the Advanced European Union (European Union and Africa). As you can well guess, this has resulted into a less than ideal situation. Only the major powers and their allies reap the rewards from this system which has resulted in an ever continuing fight for fuel and energy. This ever constant state of war has lead to the creation of a private military organization known as Celestial Being. They are dedicated to ending all war and they have four powerful gundams to do it.

The protagonist of the story is sixteen year old Setsuna F. Seiei who pilots the GN-001 Gundam Exia. You can view the opening to this awesome series below:
